Mumbai Rains: Waterlogging from roads to railway tracks, schools and colleges shut; here’s the latest update

July 06, 2026

Mumbai . Relentless heavy rainfall has brought the country’s financial capital, Mumbai, to a standstill. Severe waterlogging has occurred in several parts of the city due to the heavy downpour that has persisted for several days. Roads are submerged, railway tracks are flooded, and daily life has been severely disrupted. In light of the situation, the administration has urged residents to step out of their homes only if absolutely necessary.

Knee-deep water has accumulated on roads in several areas, including Vasai-Virar, Malad, Andheri, Bhandup, Dadar, Matunga, and Navi Mumbai. Vehicles are stranded in the waterlogged areas, with only the roofs of some cars visible in certain spots. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has ruled out any immediate respite from the rain.

  • Road cave-in, fallen trees, and traffic disruptions
A section of a road caved in amidst the heavy rain in the Bhandup area, disrupting traffic. Strong winds caused trees to uproot and fall onto roads and vehicles in various locations, causing damage. Commuting has been affected across many parts of the city due to the continuous rainfall.

Water on railway tracks; local train services affected
The rain has also impacted the local train services, which are considered the lifeline of Mumbai. Railway tracks at several stations—including Dadar, Wadala, Ghatkopar, and Nalasopara—are submerged, disrupting local train operations and causing immense inconvenience to commuters.

Five days of rain; several areas inundated
Mumbai and its surrounding regions have been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall for the past five days. Water has entered homes and shops in many parts of the city. In Bhandup, a parked car plunged into a sinkhole after a portion of the road caved in; however, no casualties have been reported in this incident. Conditions are steadily worsening in areas such as Andheri, Nalasopara, Vasai, and Virar. In Vasai, around 30 to 40 housing societies are surrounded by waterlogging, disrupting normal life. In Palghar district too, water levels have risen above knee-height in several places, forcing people to commute amidst hazardous conditions.

Building Collapse in Mankhurd; 6 Dead
Amidst the rains, a three-story chawl collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday night. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), six people—four women and two men—lost their lives in the incident. One injured person is undergoing treatment at Rajawadi Hospital.

Schools and Colleges Closed; Exams Postponed
In view of the heavy rainfall and warnings issued by the Meteorological Department, a holiday has been declared for Monday for all government, private, and BMC-run schools and colleges in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Palghar.

The IMD has issued an ‘Orange Alert’ for Mumbai and a ‘Red Alert’ for Pune. Meanwhile, Mumbai University has postponed all examinations scheduled for July 6; new dates will be announced later.

The administration has urged citizens to step out of their homes only if absolutely necessary, given the weather conditions. Heavy rains have once again severely disrupted daily life in Mumbai, a city that grapples with waterlogging issues every monsoon season.
