New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not attend the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia. The ASEAN Summit begins on Sunday, October 26th. Due to his pre-scheduled engagements, PM Modi will likely not travel to Malaysia to participate in ASEAN Summit-related meetings. According to officials familiar with the matter, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will participate and represent India. It is important to note that Donald Trump is also attending this ASEAN summit. There was a possibility that if Modi attended, he might meet with Trump. But now the wait for the meeting has increased.
The ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Summit is being held in Kuala Lumpur from October 26th to 28th. No official statement has been issued on the level of India’s participation in the ASEAN Summit discussions. Sources said India has informed Malaysia that S. Jaishankar will represent India at the ASEAN meetings. Prime Minister Modi is likely to participate in the ASEAN-India Summit virtually.
Trump is Participating
The Prime Minister has led the Indian delegation to the ASEAN-India Summit and the East Asia Summit in recent years. Malaysia has invited US President Donald Trump, along with leaders from several ASEAN Dialogue Partner countries. Donald Trump will visit Kuala Lumpur on a two-day visit on October 26. Sources said that as per the initial plan, Prime Minister Modi was also considering visiting Malaysia as well as Cambodia. Since he is not going to Malaysia, the proposed visit to Cambodia has been postponed.
What is ASEAN?
ASEAN-India Dialogue relations began with the establishment of a regional partnership in 1992. This was upgraded to a full dialogue partnership in December 1995 and a summit-level partnership in 2002. These relations were elevated to a strategic partnership in 2012. ASEAN’s 10 member states are Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia.
