New Delhi: The US White House has stated that India is no longer buying as much oil from Russia as before, and that this step was taken at the request of President Donald Trump. However, India has stated that this is not the case. “Our oil purchasing policy is entirely determined by our country’s interests and the needs of our people.”
On behalf of the US, White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt stated that President Trump is unhappy with the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine because he cannot see it ending. She said that the US has imposed new, tough sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, to impact Russia’s earnings.
Caroline also reported that China has reduced its oil purchases from Russia, and President Trump has also urged European countries to stop buying Russian oil. India, on the other hand, stated that it has not made such a decision under pressure from the US or any other country. India reiterated that its goal is to provide affordable and reliable oil to its people, and that decisions will be made based on what is best for the country.
Meanwhile, some other tensions remain between India and the US, as Trump has imposed up to 50 percent taxes on goods coming from India.
Now, let’s talk about Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump is also angry with him because he feels that Putin is not making peace efforts. The two leaders were scheduled to meet this year, but Russia rejected the US’s ceasefire proposal, which has postponed the meeting for the time being.
Trump had previously stated that he would impose sanctions only when truly necessary, and now he feels the time has come. The White House says Trump wants Russia to genuinely take steps toward ending the war.
However, the press secretary stated that Trump and Putin’s talks are not completely over. If the situation is right, a meeting between the two leaders is possible in the future.
Meanwhile, in Moscow, Putin stated that the US economic sanctions are useless and will not have any significant impact on Russia. President Putin stated that no self-respecting country makes decisions under pressure from another country.
