New Delhi: Bad news has once again emerged for Indian professionals living and working in the United States. Following the H-1B visa crisis, new difficulties have arisen for Indian workers in the United States. The Trump administration has implemented a new rule that could jeopardize the jobs of thousands of Indians. This rule, issued by the US Department of Homeland Security, comes into effect today, October 30, 2025.
According to an announcement by the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the automatic extension of EAD (Employment Authorization Document) has now been discontinued. This means that if a foreign national’s EAD is not renewed on time, they will no longer be able to continue working in the United States. Until now, foreign workers could work for up to 540 days while their EAD renewal application was pending, but this privilege has now been removed.
According to the new rule, if a person’s renewal application is not approved early, they must immediately cease work. Under this new rule, foreigners will now have to go through the vetting process repeatedly. Previously, a single application granted a long-term permit, but now they will have to complete the renewal process early.
DHS stated that foreign nationals should apply at least 180 days before their EAD expires so that their employment is not affected by the delay. This decision by the Trump administration is expected to have the greatest impact on Indian citizens, who are already facing backlogs of green card and visa applications and constitute a significant portion of the US immigrant workforce.
