Trump’s Big Oil Prediction: ‘Prices Will Plummet, Gas Could Fall Below $2’ After Iran War

September 08, 2026

New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, global oil markets remain under pressure, with rising crude prices fueling concerns over inflation and energy costs.

Against this backdrop, US President Donald Trump has made a striking prediction, claiming that crude oil prices could “plummet” if the US wins the conflict with Iran, while gasoline prices in the United States could eventually fall below $2 per gallon.

Trump made the remarks on Monday in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, as concerns over the Middle East conflict continued to weigh on global energy markets.

Trump Predicts Gas Prices Below $2
Linking the recent surge in energy prices to the Iran conflict, Trump said he expected markets to stabilize following what he described as a US victory.

He wrote that if the US wins the war with Iran, oil prices would “plummet” and gasoline prices could initially fall to around $3 per gallon before eventually dropping below $2.

Trump also reiterated his position that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons. “This will all happen soon, and Iran will never possess nuclear weapons,” he said in his post.

  • Iran Raises Gas Prices for Major Consumers
Trump’s prediction comes as Iran has reportedly increased gasoline prices for its largest consumers amid mounting economic pressure.

Under the revised pricing structure, customers exceeding a monthly quota of 110 litres will reportedly have to pay 100,000 rials per litre—twice the rate that had been in effect since December.

The latest increase marks another adjustment to fuel prices as Iran faces the economic consequences of prolonged tensions and conflict with the US. Iranian officials have also warned that any attack on the country’s energy infrastructure could trigger retaliation, adding another layer of uncertainty to global oil markets.

    Crude Oil Prices Surge
The ongoing tensions have already pushed international crude prices sharply higher. At the time of reporting, Brent crude was trading at around $97.55 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was near $93 per barrel. Murban crude was also trading significantly higher, around $107 per barrel after gaining approximately 3.40%.

With oil prices approaching the $100 mark, markets are closely watching developments between Washington and Tehran for signs of further disruption—or a potential de-escalation.

    What Happens Next?
Trump’s forecast of sharply lower oil and gasoline prices rests on the assumption that the conflict will end in a way that restores stability to energy markets. For now, however, geopolitical tensions remain elevated and crude prices continue to reflect concerns about supply disruptions.

If the conflict escalates further, oil prices could face additional upward pressure. Conversely, a sustained reduction in tensions and the restoration of normal energy flows could ease the pressure on global crude markets.

For consumers and investors, the next major factor to watch will be whether tensions in the Middle East ease or intensify—and how quickly global oil supplies respond.
