New Delhi. Donald Trump appears to be almost in war mode regarding Iran. The US State Department issued an emergency security alert on Monday, January 12, 2026, instructing all American citizens to leave Iran immediately. This move comes after violent protests and deadly crackdowns by security forces in Iran over the past two weeks, which have reportedly resulted in more than 500 deaths and thousands of arrests.
The US government has warned that American citizens, especially those with dual citizenship, face a serious risk of arbitrary arrest, interrogation, and torture there. The Iranian government has shut down internet and mobile networks across the country, completely disrupting communication.
Several international airlines have canceled their flights until January 16, leading the US to advise its citizens to leave by road through Armenia or Turkey if possible.
The Threat to Dual Citizens
The US administration has stated that the Iranian government does not recognize dual citizenship (US-Iranian). Therefore, these citizens can be treated entirely as Iranian citizens and subjected to the country’s strict laws. Showing a US passport or any evidence of ties to the US could be grounds for arrest. There is no US embassy in Iran, making it nearly impossible for citizens in distress to receive government assistance.
Internet Blackout and Flight Disruptions
To suppress the protests, the Iranian government has completely shut down the internet. According to Amnesty International, this blackout is an attempt to conceal human rights violations. Due to the unrest, major airlines such as Lufthansa, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and Qatar Airways have limited or canceled their services. Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport has become virtually isolated, making it difficult for passengers to leave.
War-like situation and US options
US President Donald Trump has not ruled out the option of military intervention against the suppression of protesters. The White House has indicated that the US could take strong military action if Iran crosses a “red line.” The US has advised its citizens to stay away from the protests, stock up on food and water, and seek shelter in a safe place for their safety.
