New Delhi: India’s “self-reliance” in the defense sector is set to receive its biggest boost yet. Israel’s Mumbai-based Consul General, Yaniv Revach, has indicated that the two countries will expand their defense agreements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel. The most important component of this deal could be the technology transfer of Israel’s renowned “Iron Dome” missile defense system.
According to Israeli Ambassador Yaniv Revach, this will not be a mere arms purchase and sale deal, but will focus on manufacturing these systems in India under the “Make in India” initiative. He said, “Our goal is to expand this agreement to specific areas, including manufacturing in India and sharing technologies like the Iron Dome.” Yaniv Revach emphasized that both India and Israel face similar security challenges. Yaniv said Israel is willing to share its defense systems technology with India because it considers India a strong and reliable strategic partner.
Yaniv said, “During this special visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we plan to expand this agreement to focus on specific areas, such as manufacturing in India, defense cooperation, and cooperation regarding the Iron Dome and other Israeli defense systems, whose technology we can share with our partners in India.”
What is the Iron Dome?
Israel’s Iron Dome system is considered one of the most advanced and reliable missile defense systems in use today. Known for its success rate of over 90%, it destroys enemy short-range missiles and rockets mid-air.
It is specifically designed to destroy short- and medium-range missiles, rockets, and drone attacks mid-air. During the recent conflict, the system demonstrated its unwavering capabilities. Iron Dome successfully intercepted over 90% of the approximately 450 missiles and 1,000 drones launched by Iran. This is a significant achievement for any missile defense system globally.
