New Delhi: Amidst the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, seven Muslim nations have launched a united front against Israel. Israel is facing international condemnation and pressure over a legislative provision regarding the death penalty in the West Bank. These seven nations—including Pakistan, Turkey, and Egypt—have issued a joint statement against Israel concerning this death penalty legislation, expressing a strong reaction to the move.
Pakistan, Turkey, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates—the Foreign Ministers of these nations issued a statement on Thursday, April 2, condemning the law passed by the Israeli Parliament (Knesset) that includes provisions for implementing the death penalty in the occupied West Bank.
The joint statement asserted that this law could be directly utilized against Palestinians and has the potential to further inflame the already existing tensions in the region. These nations characterized Israel’s move as a violation of international law and human rights, stating that it underscores Israel’s status as an occupying power. According to the joint statement, the legislation introduced by Israel could be applied to Palestinians residing in the West Bank and carries the risk of being implemented in a discriminatory manner. Specifically, there are concerns that Palestinian prisoners could be targeted under the guise of this law.
Such Steps Will Further Escalate Regional Tensions
The Foreign Ministers warned that such measures would further escalate tensions in the region, undermine the peace process, and pose a threat to the stability of the Middle East. Furthermore, the joint statement leveled serious allegations against Israel, asserting that Israel’s policies deny the fundamental rights of Palestinians and are creating a discriminatory system. Additionally, these policies challenge the very identity and existence of Palestine, a situation that could lead to a further deterioration of conditions. Concern Expressed Over the Plight of Palestinian Prisoners Furthermore, the statement expresses grave concern regarding the condition of Palestinian prisoners detained in Israeli jails. It asserts that the prisoners are allegedly being subjected to mistreatment. Complaints citing torture, inhumane treatment, and food shortages have surfaced. Their fundamental rights are being violated.
These nations further contend that these are not merely isolated incidents, but rather part of a broader pattern. The joint statement also appeals to the global community to intervene in this matter and ensure accountability. Additionally, it calls for concrete measures to be taken to maintain peace in the region. Israel has also been urged to refrain from taking actions that could further inflame tensions on the ground.
