Hajipur: A sensation gripped the area in Bihar’s Vaishali district after the partially burnt body of a woman, missing for four days, was discovered. Following the recovery of 37-year-old Rita Devi’s body in Mahisaur village (under the Jandaha police station area), her family accused her in-laws of murdering her and disposing of the body. Meanwhile, a remark made by the Station House Officer (SHO) upon arriving at the scene sparked outrage among the villagers, who staged a protest and raised slogans against the police.
Body found, and the SHO says, “Hurry up… the sun is too strong”
According to reports, Rita Devi had been missing since the night of June 5. After finding no leads for several days, her family members were actively searching for her. Amidst this, her partially burnt body was recovered from a location near the village. Upon receiving news of the discovery, a large number of villagers and family members gathered at the site.
According to eyewitnesses, Jandaha SHO Chandni Sawariya, upon arriving at the scene, urged the deceased’s maternal family to hurry, citing the intense heat of the sun. Her alleged remark—”The sun is too strong, hurry up”—angered the villagers. Subsequently, people staged a protest against the police administration and demanded impartial action in the matter.
The deceased’s sister-in-law, Rekha Devi, stated that Rita Devi had married Pappu Rai (alias Nand Kishore Rai) in 2007. She alleged that due to a family dispute, the husband had entered into a second marriage and did not wish to keep Rita with him. The family claims that Rita was murdered on the night of June 5 as a result of this dispute.
Partially burnt body found a few meters from the house
Her maternal family stated that when they arrived at Mahisaur village on June 6, they found no one at home, and her in-laws had fled. It is alleged that the in-laws had previously told them Rita had committed suicide by consuming poison and that her last rites had already been performed. However, the discovery of a partially burnt body later has cast doubt on this claim.
According to the family, the body was burnt about 500 meters away from the house after the murder, and the remains were packed into a sack and dumped into a pit. The police have taken possession of the body and initiated an investigation. Mahua SDPO Sanjeev Kumar stated that the matter is being investigated thoroughly; statements from all concerned individuals are being recorded, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
