New Delhi: The situation in Afghanistan was discussed at the United Nations Security Council. During the discussion, India strongly criticized Pakistan. P. Harish, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, launched a scathing attack on Pakistan, terming its cross-border strikes into Afghanistan as ‘genocide.’ The Indian representative accused Pakistan of violating international humanitarian laws.
India stated at the UNSC that Pakistan carried out attacks inside Afghanistan, resulting in civilian casualties. Pakistan is killing civilians under the guise of taking action against terrorism. India’s representative at the UNSC described this as the ultimate example of hypocrisy, noting that merely labeling an act of genocide as ‘military action’ does not absolve the perpetrator of the sin.
Citing data from the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, India’s representative noted that 372 civilians had been killed in the country in the first three months of 2026 alone. Most of these casualties occurred during the holy month of Ramadan. He also highlighted Afghanistan’s status as a landlocked nation and accused Pakistan of obstructing its trade routes.
P. Harish stated at the UNSC that by imposing restrictions on Afghan goods, Pakistan has violated international trade rules and the UN Charter. He also highlighted the steps India has taken to assist Afghanistan, noting that since 2021, 50,000 tonnes of wheat, 420 tonnes of medicines and vaccines, and 40,000 liters of pesticides have been sent to the country.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UNSC mentioned that a consignment of essential flood relief supplies and vaccines was sent to Kabul in April of this year. In addition to humanitarian aid, New Delhi has provided significant assistance for development across all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. India is currently implementing over 500 projects in the country. India has constructed maternity clinics in Paktika, Paktiya, and Khost.
P. Harish stated that, in addition to upgrading the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health in Kabul, India has built a trauma center, an oncology center, and a 30-bed hospital. He mentioned that India is hosting the Afghan cricket team for a bilateral series. Clarifying India’s stance, P. Harish said that we believe our Afghan brothers and sisters deserve better.
