New Delhi: Tensions flared in the Bangladesh Parliament when BNP MP Fazlur Rahman openly questioned the safety of the Hindu community and the activities of hardliners. He delivered a speech within the House that is now being discussed across the country. Rahman stated unequivocally that targeting any citizen solely because of their religion is unacceptable.
In his speech, he criticized those taking to the streets to chant slogans like “We don’t want the Ram Mandir” and “Hindus leave the country.” He remarked, “One can tell who these people are just by looking at them. Their numbers are growing, and they refuse to listen to anyone. Their sole objective is to engage in politics and business in the name of religion.”
The BNP MP told the government and the Home Minister that if the administration deems the construction of a temple inappropriate, it can make a decision in accordance with the law. However, if permission to build the temple has been granted, no one has the right to halt the process through violence or intimidation.
Fazlur Rahman said, “I am a Muslim myself. I have no issue with Hindus worshipping in their temples while I offer prayers in my mosque. What exactly is the problem with that?”
The BNP MP also strongly condemned attacks on temples and Hindu properties. He stated that such incidents tarnish the country’s image and that it is the government’s responsibility to ensure the safety of all citizens, regardless of their religion.
During Rahman’s speech, fellow BNP MPs in the House thumped their desks in support. His statement is being viewed as a strong voice advocating for the rights of the minority community.
In recent months, there has been an ongoing debate in Bangladesh regarding the safety of Hindu temples and minority communities. Against this backdrop, Fazlur Rahman’s speech in Parliament is considered significant on both political and social levels. He urged the government to uphold the rule of law and take strict action against those spreading hatred in the name of religion.
