New Delhi: The identities of the six soldiers martyred during the Indian Army’s ‘Operation Sindoor’ have now been formally revealed to the nation. For the first time, the government has made the names of these martyrs public. These names have been included in the ‘Roll of Honour’ on the National War Memorial website and inscribed in the ‘2025’ section on ‘Wall 3D’ of the war memorial.
This marks the first time the government has officially confirmed the casualties sustained during ‘Operation Sindoor’—a cross-border operation launched in May 2025 against terrorist hideouts in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). Previously, the government had not disclosed the identities of these martyrs, despite widespread reports and speculation in the media and on social media.
In May 2025, India conducted a significant military operation targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and PoK, designated as ‘Operation Sindoor’. The operation lasted for four days. Its objective was to crush cross-border terrorism and strengthen India’s security. The Indian Army, Air Force, and other forces undertook joint action during this operation.
Until now, the government had not provided details regarding military casualties sustained during the operation. However, the inclusion of these six names at the National War Memorial is being viewed as the government’s first official acknowledgment that Indian forces suffered losses during the operation. Names of the Martyrs and Their Units
The names of the six martyred soldiers and air warriors inscribed at the National War Memorial are as follows:
Subedar Major Pawan Kumar – Headquarters, 10 Infantry Brigade
Rifleman Sunil Kumar, Vir Chakra – 4 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry
Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar – 5 Field Regiment
Aviation Technician Mood Muralinayak – 851 Light Regiment
Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh – 237 Field Workshop Company
Sergeant Surendra Kumar, Vayu Sena Medal – 39 Wing
Two of them were honored for gallantry: Rifleman Sunil Kumar received the Vir Chakra, and Sergeant Surendra Kumar received the Vayu Sena Medal.
Significance of the National War Memorial
The National War Memorial is located near India Gate. Here, the names of all the country’s martyred soldiers are immortalized on the walls. Every year, the names of new martyrs are added to the section corresponding to that year. These six names have been included in the 2025 section.
Having one’s name recorded in the ‘Roll of Honour’ is not merely a formality; it is a way to acknowledge the supreme sacrifice made by these heroes for the nation. It holds immense emotional significance for their families, fellow soldiers, and the entire country. These martyrs are now officially designated as ‘Fallen Heroes’.
Government Silence and Subsequent Disclosure
Tensions prevailed on both sides for several days during ‘Operation Sindoor’. India claimed to have destroyed terrorist hideouts, while Pakistan also made certain claims. However, the Government of India had maintained silence regarding the number or names of military casualties from the very beginning. This secrecy was maintained for security and strategic reasons.
Experts view the release of these names as a positive step. It has brought justice to the families, and the people of the country can now pay tribute to their martyrs. These six soldiers laid down their lives while defending the nation. Seasoned soldiers like Subedar Major Pawan Kumar used to lead brigades. Young soldiers like Rifleman Sunil Kumar were deployed at the border. Air warriors, such as aviation technicians and sergeants, played a crucial role in providing air support. The families of the martyrs now bear the weight of grief, yet they also feel a sense of pride. The entire nation is proud of these heroes. Their sacrifice has once again demonstrated that the Indian Armed Forces remain steadfast in their policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism.
