Sikkim Tunnel Tragedy: 7 Dead, 27 Workers Trapped After Landslide; Methane Gas Hampers Rescue

New Delhi: A major tragedy unfolded in Sikkim’s Namchi district after a landslide blocked the entrance of the under-construction Samardung-Mamring tunnel, trapping around 27 workers inside. Rescue operations are in full swing, but the presence of methane gas inside the tunnel has made the mission highly challenging.

According to the district administration, seven people have lost their lives in the incident. The bodies have been shifted to Singtam District Hospital, STNM Hospital in Gangtok, and Namchi District Hospital.

Officials said the landslide caused debris to seal the tunnel entrance, leaving the workers stranded. Rescue teams are working round the clock to reach those trapped inside.

Methane Gas Complicates Rescue Efforts
The suspected presence of methane gas inside the tunnel has emerged as the biggest obstacle in the rescue operation. According to PTI, several rescue personnel experienced dizziness, while some reportedly lost consciousness after being exposed to the gas.
Authorities believe the gas was released after the landslide disturbed underground layers of soil and rock. The tunnel’s narrow passage, poor visibility, and hazardous atmosphere have forced rescue teams to proceed with extreme caution.

Multi-Agency Rescue Operation Underway
The rescue operation is being carried out under the supervision of the Namchi district administration with the support of NHPC, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Services, the Health Department, and other concerned agencies. The Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) is closely monitoring the situation as efforts continue to safely evacuate the trapped workers.
