Bangladesh Presidential Election: 35 Years Later, Direct Parliamentary Contest; Mirza Fakhrul vs Oli Ahmed

August 20, 2026

Dhaka: Bangladesh is witnessing a historic presidential election as Parliament prepares to hold a vote for the country’s top constitutional post for the first time in 35 years. The contest is primarily between Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, a veteran leader of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, who is backed by an opposition alliance of 11 parties.

According to the Bangladesh Election Commission, voting is scheduled for August 20 from 2 PM to 5 PM. The election has attracted considerable attention as the presidency has traditionally been decided without a competitive parliamentary vote.

Why Is Bangladesh Holding a Presidential Election Now?
The election has become necessary following the resignation of Mohammad Shahabuddin, who stepped down last month citing health reasons before completing his five-year term. Shahabuddin was considered a close associate of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Following his resignation, Parliamentary Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed assumed the responsibilities of Acting President. Under Bangladesh’s Constitution, a new president must be elected within 90 days of the office becoming vacant.

Mirza Fakhrul Favoured to Become 23rd President
BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has nominated 78-year-old Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the party’s presidential candidate. The BNP returned to power with an absolute majority in the February 12 elections and currently commands a two-thirds majority in Parliament. With the ruling party holding such a strong numerical advantage, Alamgir is widely considered the frontrunner and is expected to win the parliamentary vote. If elected, he would become the 23rd President of Bangladesh.

  • Oli Ahmed Leads Opposition Challenge
Alamgir’s challenger is Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed ‘Bir Bikram’, president of the Liberal Democratic Party. He is contesting as the joint candidate of an 11-party opposition alliance. The Election Commission declared the nomination papers of both candidates valid on August 16, clearing the way for the parliamentary contest.

    Oath Ceremony Expected Soon
According to reports citing sources in the Secretariat and Parliament Secretariat, the newly elected president is expected to take the oath of office and secrecy at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban following the election.

    Mirza Fakhrul’s Long Political Journey
An economist by profession, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir began his political career as a left-wing student activist during the East Pakistan era. He joined the BNP in the early 1990s and subsequently served as State Minister for Agriculture as well as Civil Aviation. He became Acting Secretary General of the BNP in 2011 and was appointed Secretary General in 2016. During periods when former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was imprisoned and Tarique Rahman remained abroad, Fakhrul played a key role in running the party. Following the February 12 election, he was appointed Minister of Local Government.

President’s Role Could Become More Powerful
Under Bangladesh’s parliamentary system, the President is primarily a ceremonial constitutional head. However, the office carries important responsibilities, including appointing the Prime Minister and Chief Justice and serving as Supreme Commander of the armed forces.

The recently reinstated caretaker-government system could also increase the President’s role concerning the armed forces. Moreover, the BNP has promised through its election manifesto to strengthen the President’s powers through constitutional amendments.

The outcome of the August 20 vote could therefore mark not only a change in Bangladesh’s presidency but also the beginning of a potentially significant shift in the balance of constitutional powers.
