Actress Ranya Rao’s tears flowed in court, made these serious allegations on DRI officials

Mumbai: Kannada actress Ranya Rao, who was caught at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru after smuggling gold from Dubai, was produced in court on Monday. During the hearing in the court, Ranya accused the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials of mental harassment and abuse.

During this, she cried in the court. While the officials have rejected her allegations and said that the actress is not cooperating in the investigation. After her arrest in the high-profile gold smuggling case, the actress was produced by the Special Court of Economic Offenses on Friday, from where she (Ranya) was sent to judicial custody till March 24.

During the hearing, the court asked Ranya several questions. The court asked the actress if she had to face any trouble? So the actress cried in the court itself and accused the DRI officials of mental harassment. After this, the court asked Ranya whether she had received medical treatment? Responding to this question, the actress claimed in a trembling voice that she has faced mental harassment.

Ranya said, ‘If I do not answer, they threaten me. They say, ‘You know what will happen if you do not speak.’ The judge further asked, just answer this question – did they give you medical treatment or third-degree interrogation?. Ranya replied, ‘They did not hit me, but they abused me badly. This has caused me a lot of mental distress.’ In response to the actress, the judge asked that you were given 30 minutes to talk to your lawyer. Why did you not tell them? Why did they not file a petition about this?

At the same time, more than six DRI officials were present during the actress’ appearance in the court. Rejecting Ranya’s claim, they have accused Ranya of not answering questions and not cooperating in the investigation. During the court proceedings, the investigating officer (IO) informed the judge that Ranya has not been subjected to any kind of harassment by the DRI officials.

The officer said, ‘During interrogation, she refuses to answer any questions. Whenever we ask, she remains silent. We have recorded the entire investigation.’ The IO further alleged, ‘Even when she was shown evidence and asked specific questions, she did not answer. Her lawyers instructed her as soon as she entered the court what to say.’ The judge then questioned Ranya’s legal team about their alleged role in influencing her statements.

Let us tell you that Ranya Rao was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on March 4, 2025 from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. She was trying to smuggle 14.8 kg of gold from Dubai. The value of this gold is estimated to be around Rs 12 crore.
