After Chhindwara, two children have lost their lives to cough syrup in Betul.

Betul: The series of deaths of children in Madhya Pradesh after consuming ‘deadly’ cough syrup continues unabated. Following Chhindwara, two more children have been confirmed dead in Betul district. Both died due to kidney failure. According to reports, both children were treated by Dr. Praveen Soni and were given Coldrif cough syrup. A total of 14 children have died in Chhindwara, Betul’s neighboring district, after consuming the dangerous cough syrup.

The administration has initiated major action in the case of children’s deaths due to cough syrup consumption in Chhindwara. ADM Dhirendra Singh stated that 14 children have died so far. He added that compensation has been approved in all these cases and the funds have been transferred to the families’ accounts. Additionally, eight children from Chhindwara are admitted to a Nagpur hospital. A team consisting of a doctor and an executive magistrate has been formed at the administrative level to monitor their condition.


ADM Singh stated that a team of the Drug Controller has also been formed, which is conducting raids and seizures in search of the banned Coldrif cough syrup. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has also been formed to investigate the matter thoroughly, and is traveling to Tamil Nadu to examine the drug’s supply chain and manufacturing process. The administration stated that every consignment containing the syrup will be closely monitored until the investigation is complete.

Meanwhile, in Jabalpur, the administration and health department have sealed the warehouse of the distributor of Kataria Pharmaceuticals in Jabalpur. Naib Tehsildar Adarsh ​​Jain stated that the investigation found that the cough syrup was supplied from there, which is the authorized distributor of the company. The warehouse where the syrup was stored has been sealed on the instructions of the Collector and SDM.

Meanwhile, Drug Inspector Praveen Patel said that the entire stock of Coldrif syrup was immediately frozen and samples were sent for testing. The report found the syrup to be substandard, prompting swift action and the seizure. Officials said the investigation is ongoing, and that traces and sampling of this brand of syrup are being conducted in other districts of the state.
