
New Delhi: The expansion of the Assam government’s Council of Ministers is scheduled to take place on June 5. CM Himanta himself provided this information and expressed his delight regarding the cabinet expansion.
Sharing the details on the social media platform ‘X’, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote: “I am pleased to inform you that the expansion of the Assam government’s Council of Ministers will take place on June 5, 2026.”
It is worth noting that in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, the BJP returned to power after securing a resounding majority. The BJP achieved victory in these elections, which were contested under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma. The NDA has registered a victory for the third consecutive time in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly. The BJP won 82 seats, while its allies—the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front—secured 10 seats each.
Himanta won his seat by a margin of 89,000 votes. Subsequently, on May 12, 2026, he took the oath as Chief Minister for the second consecutive term. Himanta Biswa Sarma had first assumed office as Chief Minister in 2021.
Himanta Biswa Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on August 23, 2015, after leaving the Congress party. He was born on February 1, 1969, into an Assamese Brahmin family in Gandhi Basti, Ulubari, located in Guwahati, Assam.
