Damascus. A horrific suicide explosion took place in a church in Damascus, the capital of Syria, on Sunday when a prayer meeting was going on there. 20 people died in the attack and 13 people were seriously injured. The attack took place in the center of the capital, which is considered the safest area of the Syrian regime. State media has described it as a cowardly terrorist attack, although no organization has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Syrian Home Ministry has confirmed that the horrific suicide attack at St. Elias Church in Duweila area of Damascus was carried out by a suicide bomber associated with the terrorist organization ISIS. According to the ministry, the attacker first entered the church, fired indiscriminately at the crowd, and then blew himself up with an explosive jacket.
Syria’s Information Minister Dr. Hamza al-Mustafa strongly condemned this terrorist attack and said that we strongly condemn this terrorist attack on the church in Duweila and express deep condolences to the families of the deceased. This cowardly act is against our values of civil unity and brotherhood. He said that Syrian society believes in national unity and civil peace and there is a need to strengthen brotherhood among all communities. He also reiterated that the government will continue to take strict action against terrorist organizations to ensure the safety of the countrymen.
