Pratapgarh (Uttar Pradesh). Taking strict measures in Kunda area of Pratapgarh district, the administration has house arrested 13 people including Jansatta Dal national president and Kunda MLA Raja Bhaiya’s father Raja Uday Pratap Singh. Along with this, more than 1000 people have been restricted across the district.
Heavy police force deployed outside the palace
This action of house arrest was taken on the orders of SDM Kunda, under which a notice was pasted on the Bhadri Mahal gate and heavy police force has been deployed outside the palace. The area is being monitored with drone cameras. This step of the administration has been taken with the intention of conducting the Moharram procession peacefully.
There is a clash every year regarding Moharram and Bhandara
The roots of this dispute are linked to the year 2012, when after the death of a monkey on the roadside in Sheikhpur village of Kunda, the villagers got a Hanuman temple built there. After this, Hanuman Paath and Bhandara were started to be organized on the tenth day of Moharram by Raja Uday Pratap Singh.
Initially, both the events took place together in 2013 and 2014, but in 2015 the Muslim community protested and refused to lift the Tazia, which increased the tension. The administration handled the matter and got the Tazia buried the next day.
House arrest 8 times since 2016
In 2016, the administration refused to give permission for the Bhandara, which further deepened the conflict between Raja Uday Pratap Singh and the administration. The matter reached the High Court, but the court directed to give the right of decision to the DM as per his discretion. From then till 2025, Uday Pratap Singh has been house arrested 8 times. This year too, the action of house arrest and restriction has been repeated a day before Muharram.
Anger among supporters
SP Pratapgarh says that this action has been taken with the aim of maintaining communal harmony. On the other hand, resentment is being seen among the supporters of Raja Uday Pratap Singh. They say that every year unilateral action is taken only for organizing the Bhandara. This time too, PAC and police force have been deployed in Sheikhpur village and the entire area is being monitored by drones. The district administration is trying to ensure that the Muharram procession is completed without any dispute.
