New Delhi: George Kurian, the Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs in the Modi government, has resigned from his ministerial post. He stepped down from the Council of Ministers following the conclusion of his Rajya Sabha tenure. According to the President’s Secretariat, President Droupadi Murmu has accepted Kurian’s resignation. The BJP did not renominate George Kurian for the Rajya Sabha in the recent elections, which is the reason behind his resignation from the Union ministerial post.
Acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Droupadi Murmu has accepted George Kurian’s resignation from the Union Council of Ministers with immediate effect. In addition to Minority Affairs, Kurian also held the portfolio of Union Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying.
Hailing from Kerala, George Kurian was the only minister from the Christian community in the Modi government at the Centre. His Rajya Sabha term ended on June 21; consequently, he decided to step down and resigned from his ministerial post the very next day.
The Rajya Sabha tenures of two Union ministers in the Modi government—George Kurian and Ravneet Singh Bittu—have concluded. While Kurian was a Rajya Sabha MP from Madhya Pradesh, Ravneet Singh Bittu represented Rajasthan in the Upper House. The BJP did not grant either leader another term in the Rajya Sabha; as a result, George Kurian resigned from his ministerial post, whereas Ravneet Bittu continues to hold his position.
Born in 1960 in Kottayam, Kerala, Kurian is a lawyer practicing in the Supreme Court. He has been a BJP worker since the party’s inception in 1980. He previously served as the Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities before being appointed as a minister in the Modi government.
