New Delhi. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have uncovered a major underground Hezbollah stronghold in southern Lebanon. Located beneath the village of Majdal Zoun, the tunnel reportedly spans approximately 200 meters in length and reaches a depth of 29 meters. According to the army, the tunnel contained launch shafts aimed at Israel, living quarters, a large quantity of weaponry, anti-tank missiles, and 50 Iranian-made explosive drones. This operation was part of security measures being conducted during the ongoing conflict.
The IDF’s 551st Brigade and the elite Yahalom unit carried out operations in the area last week. Over 20 Hezbollah fighters were reportedly killed during the mission. The army also demolished several other strongholds surrounding the tunnel. Officials stated that the stockpile of weapons inside the tunnel was ready for immediate use in potential attacks.
The army claims the tunnel was developed over the past decade with Iranian cooperation and financial backing. It was constructed beneath a populated area, with a network extending to the vicinity of the village mosque. Israel alleges that Hezbollah used civilian areas to conceal military activities.
Tunnel Served as a Hub for Attack Preparations
According to officials, the tunnel was designed not merely for movement but for sustained operations. It featured living quarters, weapon storage areas, and launch facilities. Launch shafts oriented toward Israel indicated that rocket and missile attacks could be launched from the site. The discovery of 50 Iranian drones and anti-tank missiles is being viewed as evidence of preparations for a major potential attack. Defense experts believe that Iran has long provided military and financial support to Hezbollah. They suggest that such tunnels and weapons networks may be part of a strategy to influence the regional balance of power.
*Weapons Cache Found Beneath Civilian Areas*
According to the Israeli military, the tunnel was constructed beneath an area where civilians were going about their daily lives. The army claimed that several tunnels were located near schools, hospitals, and religious sites. Videos released during the operation show weapons, drones, and living quarters inside the tunnel.
Israel alleges that Hezbollah was working to boost its military capabilities during the ceasefire. Conversely, Lebanon maintains that Israeli military actions impact the local population. These developments have sparked a fresh debate regarding the stability and future of the ongoing ceasefire in the region.
*Operations to Continue*
The IDF has clarified that search and surveillance operations in southern Lebanon will continue. The military’s objective is to identify and neutralize all potential tunnels and strongholds along the border. According to Israeli officials, specialized units—such as the Yahalom unit—possess the expertise to detect and destroy complex underground structures.
