New Delhi. A major accident was averted on Tuesday night in Mumbai, the capital of Maharashtra. Two aircraft ended up on the same runway at Mumbai Airport simultaneously. Acting promptly, Air Traffic Control (ATC) ordered the halt of one aircraft’s take-off run midway. The aircraft subsequently returned to the parking bay. The aircraft whose take-off run was aborted is reported to belong to Air India.
According to reports, an Air India Express aircraft had landed at Mumbai Airport. Having arrived from Siliguri, West Bengal, this aircraft had not yet fully cleared the runway after landing when an Air India aircraft began preparing to take off from the same runway. With both aircraft on the same runway, ATC issued instructions to stop the Air India flight’s take-off run.
It is reported that the Air India flight (AI816) involved a large Boeing 777-300 aircraft, while the flight from Siliguri (AIX1547) was a smaller Boeing 737 Max 8. Following the ATC’s instruction to abort the take-off run, the Air India aircraft returned to the bay. Air India has issued a statement regarding the incident.
Air India stated that the flight crew halted the take-off process upon receiving instructions from ATC, and the aircraft was taken back to the bay. Necessary technical inspections of the aircraft will be conducted in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Alternative arrangements are being made to transport the passengers to their destinations as soon as possible.
