Mumbai. Mumbai’s great spinner Padmakar Shivalkar died here on Monday due to age-related problems. He was 84 years old. Shivalkar, one of the best spinners who never played for India, took part in a total of 124 first-class matches between 1961-62 and 1987-88 and took 589 wickets at an average of 19.69. Apart from this, he got 16 wickets in List A cricket. In this way, despite taking more than 600 wickets, he could not get a chance in the Indian team. On this, Sunil Gavaskar has said that Shivalkar was more deserving to play for India than some other players.
The left-arm spinner made his Ranji Trophy debut at the age of 22 and continued to play till the age of 48. He took 589 wickets in India’s premier domestic competition, including 13 10-wicket hauls. Shivalkar has taken 16 wickets in 12 List A matches. He was awarded the CK Nayudu ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in 2017. Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik said, “Mumbai cricket has lost a true legend today. Padmakar Shivalkar sir’s contribution to the game, especially as one of the finest spinners of all time, will always be remembered.”
At the same time, the great Sunil Gavaskar on Monday paid an emotional tribute to Mumbai and domestic cricket legend Padmakar Shivalkar, saying that ‘some were more deserving to play in the Indian team than others’. Shivalkar was one of the best spinners of the country who never got a chance to play for the national team. Gavaskar wrote an emotional message on Shivalkar’s death and said, “This is really very sad news. In a short span of time, Mumbai cricket has lost two of its great players Milind and Padmakar. Both of them were the architects of many victories. ”
He said, “As the Indian captain, I regret that I could not convince the national selectors to include ‘Paddy’ in the Test team. He deserved to be in the Indian team more than some other bowlers. You can call it luck. He was a bowler who would ensure victory for Mumbai by dismissing the best batsmen of the opponent team. He could bowl all day with his economical run up and beautiful action. ‘Paddy’ was a unique person and I am very sad by his demise. Om Shanti. “
