New Delhi. Permission for collective prayers was not given on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat in Srinagar’s historic Jamia Mosque for the sixth consecutive year. At the same time, the police put Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also called this action of the police unfortunate. He said that this shows that even now people cannot trust law and order and administration.
Omar Abdullah wrote in a social media post, it is very unfortunate to seal the historic Jamia Masjid on such a holy occasion. This has shaken the faith of the people. Srinagar police should have found a better way. He feels that there can be no peace until there is strictness. However, the people of Srinagar deserve better.
On the other hand, Anjuman Auqaf Jamia Masjid said that Mirwaiz Farooq was imprisoned in his residence on Thursday morning. In such a situation, he could not even go to the mosque to offer namaz. At the same time, the mosque management says that the police had informed them that namaz would not be allowed on the occasion of Shab-e-Barat at night. Usually, namaz was offered in Jamia Masjid under the leadership of Mirwaiz.
Let us tell you that even in the last five years, permission has not been given for Shab-e-Barat namaz in Jamia Masjid. It was banned since the abolition of Article 370 in 2019. Anjuman Auqaf said that a large number of people wanted to offer namaz in the historic and holy mosque. But the police administration forcibly closed the mosque and put Mirwaiz under house arrest. The fundamental religious rights of the people are being violated. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have suffered a big shock.
PDP President Mehbooba Mufti said that she was shocked to hear the news that Jama Masjid was closed. The general public was stopped from going there. She asked the Lieutenant Governor and Omar Abdullah whether any answer would be given in this regard. She called this action of the police unconstitutional.
