New Delhi: Amidst ongoing diplomatic efforts regarding a potential agreement between the United States and Iran, a crucial meeting held at the White House failed to yield a definitive outcome. US President Donald Trump held discussions lasting nearly two hours with his top advisors and officials in the White House Situation Room on Friday; however, no final decision was reached by the conclusion of the meeting.
According to reports, a senior official within the Trump administration stated that the President departed the meeting without reaching any specific conclusion. The official added that Trump would only approve an agreement that satisfies the “red lines” he has established and effectively curbs Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Prior to the meeting, Trump had clarified on social media that the key terms of any agreement would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. He also asserted that Iran must provide guarantees that it will never develop nuclear weapons and must agree to place its stockpile of enriched uranium under US control.
Claims of an Impending US-Iran Agreement
Iran has already voiced its opposition to these conditions. Consequently, the path toward an agreement between the two nations still appears fraught with difficulty. In fact, several media reports in recent days have claimed that American and Iranian negotiators are nearing an interim agreement. Under this proposed arrangement, the current ceasefire could be extended for 60 days, during which time detailed negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program would continue.
US Military Pressure on Iran Persists
However, alongside these diplomatic talks, the United States has maintained its military pressure. Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth stated that if an agreement is not reached, the United States remains fully prepared to undertake military action once again. He remarked, “We can take action again if necessary. Our military capabilities and arsenal are sufficient for this purpose.” Hegseth also stated that President Trump seeks an “excellent deal” that ensures Iran can never acquire nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, an atmosphere of mistrust is clearly evident on the part of Tehran as well. Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, asserted that Iran no longer places its trust solely in words or promises. He wrote on social media, “If the other side takes no action, neither will we. We have secured concessions not through negotiations, but through missiles.”
Former IRGC Commander Mohsen Rezaei also questioned Trump’s intentions, stating that the United States continues to pursue a policy of exerting pressure through a naval blockade and stringent conditions.
