Ukraine: 5 Dead in Shooting in Capital Kyiv; Attacker Also Killed

New Delhi: Five people were killed and several others are reported injured in a shooting incident that took place on Saturday in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine. Ukrainian officials stated that the attacker was subsequently shot dead during a police operation at a supermarket, where he had been holding several people hostage.

Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, confirmed that the suspect was killed during the attempt to apprehend him. The gunman had also opened fire on the police and taken several individuals hostage. The incident occurred in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that five people lost their lives in the incident. He expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and stated that an investigation into the matter is underway.

The President stated that Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, has confirmed that the attacker responsible for opening fire on civilians in Kyiv has been killed. All circumstances surrounding the incident are currently being investigated. As of now, five deaths have been reported. He also extended his condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased.

At Least 10 Injured

Live broadcasts from the scene showed police teams taking up positions inside the mall complex—where the supermarket was located—amidst the exchange of gunfire. The sounds of gunshots could be heard. According to reports, people present in the vicinity were immediately evacuated to safe locations as the situation deteriorated.

Ukrainian officials reported that at least 10 people sustained injuries and have been admitted to the hospital—many in a state of shock—where they are currently receiving treatment. During the police operation, four hostages were safely rescued.

Officials from Ukraine’s National Police and Security Service are actively engaged in investigating the case. While the investigation remains ongoing, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has been instructed to release only verified information to the public.
