Washington. US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that the US military launched new strikes against Iran this evening at 7:15 PM (ET). This marks the third round of attacks against Iran this week. These strikes are being carried out under the direction of US President and Commander-in-Chief Donald Trump. According to CENTCOM, this action is in response to an attack on a commercial vessel by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Attack on a ship in Hormuz
The Iranian military had attacked the ‘M/V GFS Galaxy,’ a Cyprus-flagged container ship passing through the Strait of Hormuz. In a statement released on the social media platform ‘X,’ CENTCOM reported that a civilian crew member of the ship is missing following the attack. The vessel is unable to continue its voyage due to a fire and severe damage to its engine room.
Explosions at multiple locations in Iran
Following the US strikes, sounds of explosions were heard at several locations across Iran. According to a report by Iran’s Mehr News Agency, sounds of explosions were heard on Qeshm Island. Additionally, Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB reported three explosions in Bandar Abbas and two in Sirik.
Iran failed to honor the agreement
In its statement, the US military noted that Iran had previously been held responsible for attacks on commercial vessels. It was subsequently given another opportunity to abide by the Memorandum of Understanding but failed to do so again. In response, the US is imposing a heavy cost on Iran. The United States aims to destroy the capability Iran uses to attack civilian mariners and commercial vessels passing freely through the Strait of Hormuz.
