
New Delhi. Following the monsoon’s arrival—delayed by five to six days—in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, these hilly states are experiencing heavy rainfall. Normal life was severely disrupted by cloudbursts at two locations in the Doda district of Jammu & Kashmir. Incidents of cloudbursts were also reported at three locations across the Lahaul-Spiti and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh. In Uttarakhand, helicopter services to the Kedarnath shrine had to be suspended, and four flights scheduled for Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport had to be diverted to other locations.
Showers bring relief from heat and humidity in Delhi-NCR
Two people lost their lives due to lightning strikes in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Rain and floods have compounded difficulties in the Northeast, as well as in Mumbai and southern states. However, showers in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana have provided significant relief from the scorching heat and humidity, with temperatures dropping by approximately 6 degrees Celsius. Pilgrimages to the Machail Mata and Mindhal Mata shrines in Kishtwar, Jammu & Kashmir, have been suspended, and helicopter services to the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine have been affected.
Many roads closed in Himachal and Uttarakhand
In Himachal, traffic has been disrupted as heavy rains and landslides caused extensive damage to over 50 roads across Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala. Rainfall is also occurring in the Dehradun, Bageshwar, and Rudraprayag districts of Uttarakhand.
Severe flood situation in Assam
More than 46,938 people across six districts of Assam have been affected by floods, while over 3,809 hectares of agricultural land remain submerged. The districts of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Nalbari, Dibrugarh, and Chirang are the worst-hit; a total of 221 villages across 10 revenue circles in these districts are currently reeling under the impact of the floods. Maharashtra and Karnataka are experiencing heavy rains. Mumbai has been witnessing continuous rainfall for the past two days. A ‘Red Alert’ has been issued for Palghar district, forecasting heavy rain over the next 24 hours. In Mangaluru, Karnataka, a woman and her two daughters died after their house was buried under a landslide triggered by heavy rain.
