UK includes India in the list of 15 countries with first deportation, then appeal policy

August 12, 2025

London: The British government has given a shock by including India in the list of countries whose citizens are first deported, then appealed. India’s name has now been added to the new list of 15 countries. Under this policy, if an Indian citizen is found guilty of crimes in Britain, he will first be deported, only after that his appeal will be heard. That is, by appealing against his deportation decision, that person will not be able to delay the deportation nor will he be able to stay in Britain.

The British government says that the purpose of this policy is to reduce overcrowding in prisons and also to reduce the concern of the common people about crime. It has been said in this policy that if a person is found guilty of any crime, first there will be deportation, then appeal can be made. Under this initiative, the deported person will have to participate in the hearing related to any appeal against his deportation through video link from India itself. However, terrorists, murderers and those serving life sentences will have to serve their sentence in the UK before deportation can be considered.

Earlier, could appeal while staying in the UK itself
Earlier, criminals from the respective countries could stay in the UK for years while appealing against deportation under human rights laws. According to the new law, deported Indians are barred from re-entering the UK. However, after returning to their country, it will depend on India whether they will be sent to jail or released.

Rules will apply to a total of 23 countries
Till now, Britain could deport foreign criminals from eight countries without appealing in the UK – these countries were – Finland, Nigeria, Estonia, Albania, Belize, Mauritius, Tanzania and Kosovo. The expanded new list now includes countries like India, Bulgaria, Australia, Canada, Angola, Botswana, Brunei, Guyana, Indonesia, Kenya, Latvia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Uganda and Zambia. Now there are a total of 23 countries in it. This scheme was first started in 2014 during the reign of the Conservative Party. It has been implemented again in 2023.
