New Delhi: The government has issued a major update for users of apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Snapchat. The government has implemented new requirements and made necessary changes to the use of many popular messaging apps in the country. Previously, WhatsApp and other messaging apps could be used without a SIM card on any smartphone, but this will no longer be possible. Any app can be installed without a SIM card, but a SIM card with the registered mobile number must be inserted in the device to login and use it.
Under the Department of Telecommunications’ (DoT) new rules, WhatsApp Web and similar web versions will automatically log out every six hours and require a QR code to login again. This change aims to prevent cybercriminals from exploiting these apps. Previously, cybercriminals were able to commit fraud using the apps even after the SIM card was deactivated, as the app functioned independently of the SIM card once logged in. SIM binding will now create a strong link between the user’s number, phone, and app, helping control spam, fraudulent calls, and financial fraud.
Because strengthening the telecom security infrastructure is a priority for the government, companies will be required to implement this rule within 90 days and submit a compliance report within 120 days. This new rule, implemented under the Telecommunications Cyber Security (Amendment) Rules, 2025, brings app-based telecom services under stringent telecommunications regulations for the first time. Experts believe that this rule will make mobile number-based digital identities more trustworthy. This new rule will make app-based communications in India more secure and accountable, which will benefit all users.
SIM card binding may cause users to log off quickly, but in the long run, it will help increase security and reduce fraud. It is believed that this government decision will further strengthen the security of apps that send and receive messages and users’ personal information.
