MP’s ‘Bittu Tabahi’ Wins Hearts: Kevin Pietersen Praises His River Cleanup Mission, Dutch CEO Offers Him a Job

Bhopal/Rajgarh: Sometimes, a big change begins with just one person refusing to look away. In Madhya Pradesh’s Biaora, 21-year-old Bittu ‘Tabahi’ took on a task that many had dismissed as impossible—cleaning the heavily polluted Ajnar River.

With no heavy equipment, no professional training and initially not even knowing how to swim, Bittu began removing garbage from the river with his own hands. What started as a personal mission soon became a social-media sensation, attracting praise from prominent personalities including industrialist Anand Mahindra, former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

The campaign has now gained international attention, with Boyan Slat, founder and CEO of Dutch environmental organisation The Ocean Cleanup, reportedly offering Bittu an opportunity to work with the organisation.

Who Is Bittu ‘Tabahi’?

Bittu is a resident of Biaora and a second-year B.Sc. Biology student. On social media, he goes by the unusual name ‘Bittu Tabahi’.

But there is a purpose behind the name.

Explaining it, Bittu says the word ‘Tabahi’, which means destruction or havoc, is unusual—and he decided to use it to represent a different kind of destruction: destroying pollution and doing good for society.

He Started Cleaning the River Without Fear

On January 26, 2026, Bittu launched his campaign near a temple in Biaora, where sections of the Ajnar River had become heavily polluted with plastic, discarded waste and other garbage.

Without waiting for authorities or a large group of volunteers, he began cleaning the river himself.

He later joined hands with a few friends, pooling around ₹30,000 to purchase cleaning equipment, trash bins and arrange a JCB machine to help remove larger quantities of waste.

His determination came at a personal cost. During the campaign, Bittu reportedly developed a severe skin infection on his hands and legs. Despite falling ill, he continued with his efforts to clean the river.

Kevin Pietersen Says: ‘Well Done, Brother!’

Bittu’s story eventually travelled far beyond Madhya Pradesh.

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen shared Bittu’s story on Instagram and praised his determination.

Pietersen highlighted how Bittu had entered the polluted river without gloves or proper footwear and, despite not knowing how to swim, had taken the initiative to clean it.

His message ended with a simple but powerful appreciation: “Well done, brother!”

The recognition from an international sports personality gave Bittu’s campaign an even wider audience.

Anand Mahindra Calls Him a Role Model

Industrialist Anand Mahindra also drew attention to Bittu’s efforts after sharing a video of his work on March 30.

Addressing criticism that Bittu might be seeking social-media likes, Mahindra argued that if the desire for attention encourages someone to do genuine good, there is nothing wrong with it.

He praised Bittu’s initiative and described him as a role model.

Dutch Environmental Leader Offers Opportunity

Bittu’s campaign also caught the attention of Boyan Slat, the Dutch environmental entrepreneur behind The Ocean Cleanup.

Impressed by the young student’s determination to tackle water pollution, Slat reportedly offered Bittu a job opportunity with the organisation.

For a young man who started by cleaning a polluted river in his hometown with limited resources, the recognition represents a remarkable turn in his journey.

‘Tabahi’ Against Pollution

Bittu’s unusual social-media identity has now taken on a new meaning.

While ‘Tabahi’ literally refers to destruction or havoc, Bittu has turned the idea on its head. His mission is to bring ‘tabahi’ to water pollution—one piece of plastic, one pile of garbage and one polluted stretch of river at a time.

He has also started work on converting waste from religious offerings into compost, adding another dimension to his environmental campaign.

CM Mohan Yadav Also Praises Bittu

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has also praised Bittu’s determination.

In a post on X, the Chief Minister said Bittu had demonstrated that meaningful change does not always require a huge crowd. Sometimes, a single determined person taking the first step can inspire an entire society.

Yadav linked Bittu’s initiative with the spirit of the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan, which focuses on the conservation and rejuvenation of water bodies through public participation.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that Bittu’s work on the Ajnar River would motivate more young people across Madhya Pradesh to take responsibility for water conservation in their own communities.

From Biaora to the World

What began as one young student’s decision to clean a polluted river has now become an inspiring story of determination, environmental responsibility and youth-led change.

Bittu did not wait for perfect resources, a large organisation or government machinery to take the first step. He simply started.

And that decision has taken the story of ‘Bittu Tabahi’ from the banks of the Ajnar River to audiences across India and beyond.
