‘I Saw Him Leave for Work, Then Saw Him in a Coffin’: Nimrat Kaur Recalls Father’s Terrorist Killing

Mumbai: Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur has opened up about one of the most painful chapters of her childhood—the killing of her father, Major Bhupendra Singh, who was serving in the Indian Army.

Speaking on a podcast, Nimrat recalled the day her father was abducted by terrorists in Kashmir and later killed. She revealed that she was in Kashmir when the incident happened and remembered seeing her father leave for work that morning, only to see him again in a coffin.

Nimrat Kaur Recalls the Day Her Father Was Killed

Nimrat explained that her father was travelling to his place of duty when he was abducted while returning. According to her, the terrorists were dressed in army uniforms and demanded the release of terrorists held in India, along with other demands.

Her father was reportedly kept captive for seven days. On the seventh day, the family received the devastating news that he had been shot dead.

Recalling the heartbreaking moment, Nimrat said, “I saw him leave for work that morning, and the next time I saw him, he was in a coffin. We never got any closure.”

‘He Told Them He Had a Family and Two Daughters’

Nimrat also shared a deeply emotional detail that the family learned later. Before he was killed, her father reportedly told his captors that he had a family and two daughters.

For Nimrat, the revelation underscored that even during his final moments, her father was thinking about his family.

Who Was Nimrat Kaur’s Father?

Nimrat Kaur’s father, Major Bhupendra Singh, was killed by terrorists in Kashmir in 1994. He was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra for his bravery and sacrifice.

In October 2024, a statue of Major Bhupendra Singh was unveiled in his birthplace, Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, in his honour.

Nimrat Kaur Opens Up About Her Mother’s Struggle

Nimrat also spoke about how her mother raised her and her sisters following the tragedy. She said her mother was in her mid-30s when her husband was killed, leaving her to rebuild the family after the devastating loss.

Describing the impact of the tragedy, Nimrat said her father’s death was deeply traumatic for her mother, who took on the responsibility of raising their children alone.

During the same conversation, Nimrat also discussed her career and the success of The Lunchbox. She revealed that she was offered around 10–15 similar roles after the film but deliberately turned them down because she did not want to be typecast.
