Rohit Sharma retires from Test cricket

    New Delhi: Indian team’s star batsman Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement from Test cricket. Rohit had already retired from the T20 format. Now Rohit Sharma will not be seen playing in Test cricket as well. However, Rohit Sharma will continue to play in ODIs. With this decision, Rohit Sharma’s 11-year long Test career came to an end. Rohit played 67 Tests, out of which he captained 24 Tests. He scored a total of 4301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. Rohit hit 88 sixes and 473 fours in Tests.

    Rohit was about to make his Test debut against South Africa in Nagpur in 2010, but in that match, he suffered a strange injury moments before the toss. After this, his Test debut happened three years later. He scored a century on his debut Test against West Indies at Eden Gardens ground in Kolkata in 2013. He scored another century in his next Test in Mumbai. At the same time, Rohit played the last Test match on 26 December 2024 against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

    Let us tell you that a five-Test series is starting in England from June 20. There was a discussion that Rohit Sharma will not captain this series and some other player will be given this opportunity in his place. The team for this series was to be announced in the next two weeks. The selectors were considering appointing a new captain at the start of the new World Test Championship cycle. But even before that Rohit announced his retirement.

    Rohit said in a post on social media on Wednesday evening, ‘Hello everyone, I want to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It is an honor for me to represent my country. Thank you for the love and support received over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.’

    Under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India won 12 matches in Test cricket, while it lost 9. The Indian team’s win percentage under Rohit’s captaincy was 50. Rohit Sharma has so far scored 11168 runs in 273 ODIs at an average of 48.77. He has scored 32 centuries and 58 half-centuries. Rohit has 4301 runs in 67 Test matches at an average of 40.58, which includes 12 centuries and 18 half-centuries. He has scored 6868 runs in 159 T20 Internationals at an average of 29.73. 5 centuries and 32 half-centuries have come from his bat. However, Rohit Sharma retired from this format after making India the champion in the last T20 World Cup.
