Rare Religious Confluence in Ujjain: Nagchandreshwar Temple Opens for 24 Hours as Millions Seek Darshan

August 17, 2026

Ujjain: A massive wave of devotion swept through Ujjain as the doors of the revered Shri Nagchandreshwar Mahadev Temple, located atop the Mahakal Temple, were opened at midnight on Sunday. The temple is opened for devotees only once a year on the occasion of Nag Panchami.

This year, the religious fervour has intensified as Nag Panchami coincides with the third Monday of the holy month of Sawan, along with the traditional procession of Baba Mahakal through the city.

  • According to tradition, Mahant Vineet Giri Maharaj of the Shri Panchayati Mahanirvani Akhara was the first to enter and open the temple doors. Preparatory rituals began around 11:30 PM, followed by Mahabhishek and special worship of Lord Nagchandreshwar.

After the initial rituals and Aarti, devotees were allowed to enter the temple for Darshan. The temple will remain open for devotees for approximately 24 hours, with the Darshan period concluding at midnight on Monday.

Rare Idol of Lord Nagchandreshwar Draws Devotees

The Nagchandreshwar Temple is located on the third level of the Mahakal Temple’s spire and is renowned for its unique idol.

The centuries-old idol, believed to date back to around the 11th century, depicts Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati seated beneath the hood of a seven-headed serpent. Serpents are also depicted around Lord Shiva’s neck and arms, while figures of Lord Ganesha, Nandi and a lion are carved into the sculpture.

According to local tradition, the rare idol is believed to have been brought from Nepal.

As the temple gates opened, the complex echoed with chants of “Jai Shri Nagchandreshwar”, while devotees waited eagerly for the rare annual Darshan.

    Devotees Queue Through the Night

Hundreds of devotees began lining up from around 11 PM on Sunday, hours before the temple doors opened. As the Darshan process began after the rituals, devotees moved forward amid chants and prayers.

The administration has made extensive arrangements to manage the expected rush, including separate routes for general and quick Darshan.

Nagchandreshwar Darshan and Baba Mahakal Procession on Same Day

The religious significance of the occasion has increased further because the traditional Baba Mahakal procession will also take place on Monday.

Devotees will therefore have the opportunity to witness both the annual Darshan of Lord Nagchandreshwar and the procession of Baba Mahakal on the same day.

In view of the anticipated crowd, separate entry and exit routes have been arranged for devotees visiting both temples.

Three Major Worship Rituals During the Day

As per tradition, Lord Nagchandreshwar will be worshipped three times during the 24-hour opening period.

    The schedule includes:

    – 12 noon: Shasan Puja
    – Around 7:30 PM: Evening Aarti followed by worship by temple priests
    – Midnight: Final Puja by the Akhara, followed by closure of the temple

    Separate Routes for Devotees

For Nagchandreshwar General Darshan, devotees will enter through Gate No. 4 after proceeding from Karkraj Parking via Bhil Samaj Dharamshala, Chardham and Harsiddhi Square. The exit will be through the prepaid booth towards 24 Khamba Road.

For Nagchandreshwar Shighra Darshan, entry will be through Gate No. 5 via Harsiddhi Pal and Bada Ganesh Marg, with exit through the prepaid booth towards Harsiddhi Pal.

For Mahakal General Darshan, entry has been arranged through Triveni Museum, Nandi Dwar, Manasarovar and the Ganesha-Kartikeya Mandaps. Exit will be through Ambulance Gate and Pinaki Dwar.

For Mahakal Shighra Darshan, devotees will have direct entry through Neelkanth Dwar.

Special Facilities for Elderly and Differently-Abled Devotees

The administration has also arranged wheelchairs for elderly and differently-abled devotees. These are available near shoe stands and first-aid centres, with staff deployed in shifts to assist devotees.

Temporary shoe stands have been arranged at locations including Bhil Samaj Dharamshala and Jhalariya Math. Drinking water facilities, including water bottles and dispensers, have also been placed at several points along the Darshan routes.

With Nag Panchami, Sawan Monday and Baba Mahakal’s procession converging on the same day, Ujjain is witnessing an extraordinary gathering of faith, with devotees arriving in large numbers for the rare annual Darshan of Lord Nagchandreshwar.
