New Delhi. On hearing the name of Naga Sadhus, a little unknown fear often enters the minds of common devotees. Here we spoke to Naga Sanyasi of Juna Akhara, Saint Arjun Puri. In the conversation, we asked him many questions about various misconceptions related to Nagas. During this, the Naga Sanyasi also spoke very openly and removed the curtains from all the misconceptions. He told us how Naga saints are made? How difficult is this process and where do Naga Sanyasis live after Mahakumbh.

When did he become a Naga Sanyasi?
First of all, we asked Naga Saint Arjun Puri about him. We asked when did you take sanyaas. In response to this, Naga Saint Arjun Puri told that he has been a Naga Sanyasi since the age of five. When he became enlightened, he was in the refuge of saints. He told that I was brought up through knowledge, devotion and renunciation. My entire life till now has been a saintly life. The Naga saint told that he is sent all over the world by Juna Akhara to propagate religion. The main objective is to propagate Sanatani people in India and other countries.

What do Naga Sanyasis do?
In response to this question, Naga Saint Arjun Puri told that we are soldiers of Sanatan. This is the army of Sanatan. To expand Sanatan, strengthen it and hoist its flag all over the world, an army of Naga saints is formed. Then they are sent all over the country and abroad like spies. After going there, we propagate Sanatani religion and culture.

Process of becoming a Naga Sanyasi
Saint Arjun Puri told that the process of becoming a Naga Sanyasi is very difficult. Not everyone is given Naga Sanyas. It is given only to those who come under the shelter of Naga ascetics from childhood. He told that after this they have to undergo many types of rigorous sadhanas, austerities, meditation-yoga and worship. Their linga mardan is done from childhood. In Naga Sanyas, to become Digambar and Shri Digambar, initiation is taken from childhood.

Why do Nagas not feel cold?
The Naga ascetic also told the reason behind not feeling cold. He said that we apply bhabhuti after consecrating it with mantra. It works as a special clothing for us. Apart from this, we live our life with discipline. We stay away from many types of pleasures. Therefore, energy and fire remain in the body continuously. Our body remains warm and strong from inside. This protects us from the onslaught of weather.

What is the routine of a Naga ascetic?
According to Naga Saint Arjun Puri, the day of a Naga ascetic starts at three or three thirty. After bathing etc. we start chanting. After this we perform havan. After all this, the period of study begins. Those who cannot read, do chanting. He told that apart from this they also do service etc. They also do other work including cleaning in the ashram. Those who are capable of reading and writing, remain engaged in reading religious texts.

Where do Naga sanyasis live?
The Naga saint told that after Kumbh-Mahakumbh we go to live in cold places. The reason for this is that the energy level in our body is very high. We are unable to tolerate heat. That is why we live in cold places only. He said that we either go towards the Himalayas or to a high altitude place in Himachal Pradesh, where it is very cold. Then whenever a big fair is held, we reach there. Otherwise we stay in caves on the mountains and keep doing sadhana.

Why are we afraid of Naga Sanyasis?
In response to this question, the Naga Sanyasis said that people should not be afraid. Actually, we sit with ash on our face. We are naked from the mind to the body. We feel that this is the reason why people are afraid. Apart from this, there is a misconception in people’s mind that Naga Sadhus are very tough. But the reality is that our heart is as soft as butter. He said that we want to tell people that the whole society should come under the shelter of saints. Do not have any kind of fear. There is no need to be afraid. We Naga Sanyasis are very kind.

What is our food?
Naga Saint Arjun Puri said that our food is very pure and satvik. Sweet potatoes, potatoes, green vegetables, milk-curd, wheat-gram flour roti, pure rice etc. are included in our food. We eat only once a day. We worship Satvik gods. Among them we worship Shiva, Surya, Durga, Ganesh, Lord Ram, Dattatreya etc. Our lifestyle is also very Satvik. There is no place for Rajoguna and Tamoguna in our life. We are dominated by Satoguna.
