MP: Atrocity against woman in Ujjain… hair chopped, clothes torn, garlanded with shoes, and paraded through the village

July 03, 2026

Ujjain. An incident that shames humanity has come to light from the Ujjain district of Madhya Pradesh. The woman’s only “offense” was that she sought rights for her children and a share in the ancestral property. Angered by this, her ex-husband, in-laws, and some villagers subjected her to such brutality that it shook the entire region. Her hair was chopped off, her clothes were torn, and she was paraded through the village wearing a garland of shoes. Throughout this ordeal, her second husband kept pleading for mercy with folded hands, but no one came to their aid.

The incident reportedly took place in Harniya Kheda village under the Jharda Tehsil of Ujjain district. Although the incident occurred three days ago, a video of it went viral on social media on Thursday. Upon the video surfacing, the police department swung into action and initiated swift proceedings in the matter.

  • The video shows that the woman’s hair has been cut off. She is seen standing in a semi-naked state with torn clothes and a garland of shoes around her neck. Her second husband is also present with her, and both are being paraded through the village. The husband is seen repeatedly pleading for mercy with folded hands, yet no one present stepped forward to help them; instead, many people continued to record the entire incident on video.

According to reports, the woman had left her first husband’s home about three years ago and subsequently married another man. She was living separately with her two children. A few days ago, she visited her former in-laws’ home to claim rights for her children and a share in the ancestral property. It is alleged that, enraged by this, her ex-husband, father-in-law, and other family members—along with some villagers—grabbed the woman and her second husband. Following this, the woman’s hair was cut, her clothes were torn, and she was subjected to public humiliation and outrage against her modesty. Even then, the accused were not appeased; garlands of shoes were placed around the necks of the woman and her second husband, and they were paraded through the village. Throughout this ordeal, many villagers remained mere spectators; no one attempted to rescue the woman or stop the perpetrators. Upon receiving information about the incident, the ‘Dial 112’ police arrived at the scene and safely rescued the woman. Subsequently, acting on the victim’s complaint, the police immediately registered a case and initiated an investigation.

Ujjain SP Pradeep Sharma stated that the victim had been living separately with her two children for the past three to four years. She had visited the village to claim custody of her children and a share in the ancestral property. Angered by this, her ex-husband, father-in-law, and other relatives—along with some locals—subjected her to this shameful incident.

The SP informed that, based on the woman’s complaint, an FIR has been registered against 11 named individuals—including her ex-husband and father-in-law—under various serious charges. The main accused have been arrested, while the police are conducting continuous raids to apprehend those still at large. The police have also arrested the individual who recorded the video of the incident and circulated it on social media; his mobile phone has been seized. Authorities are identifying other individuals involved based on the video to ensure that no perpetrator escapes justice.

SP Pradeep Sharma stated that, alongside criminal proceedings, legal assistance is being provided to the victim. The District Legal Services Authority is helping her understand and assert her rights, and the process to secure her legal share in the ancestral property has also been initiated.

This incident has once again raised the question of how such a gross act of inhumanity against a woman could unfold before a crowd while most people simply watched. Some deemed recording a video more important than offering help. However, once the video went viral, the police acted swiftly and took strict measures against the accused. Case registered against 11 named accused
The police have stated that no accused involved in the case will be spared. A search for the absconding accused is underway, and strict legal action will be taken against all of them. Meanwhile, the necessary procedures to ensure the victim’s safety, provide legal aid, and secure justice for her are ongoing. This case has become a topic of discussion across the state, and a video of the incident is rapidly going viral on social media.
