Giridih: Jharkhand woke up to heartbreaking news on Sunday morning as Sudivya Kumar Sonu, MLA from Giridih and a minister in the Hemant Soren-led government, passed away suddenly. According to preliminary reports, the minister died after suffering a heart attack. His mortal remains are currently at Mercy Hospital in Giridih.

Sonu was serving his second consecutive term as the Giridih MLA, having won both elections on a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) ticket. His sudden demise has sent shockwaves across the political fraternity, party workers and his supporters.

Close Confidant of Hemant Soren

Sudivya Kumar Sonu was regarded as one of Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s close associates and held several important responsibilities in the state government.

He was handling the crucial Urban Development portfolio, along with departments including Youth Affairs, Sports, Art & Culture, Tourism, and Higher & Technical Education. His role in the functioning of the government made his sudden passing a major loss for both the administration and the JMM.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed deep grief over Sonu’s death and shared an emotional message on X.

Soren said he received the heartbreaking news of the death of his elder brother and dear friend, Sudivya Kumar Sonu, late at night. He said accepting the loss was extremely difficult and that Sonu’s departure had created a void in his life that words could not adequately express.

The Chief Minister described Sonu as much more than a senior colleague or political associate, saying he was like an elder brother who offered affection, guidance and stood by him through difficult times.

Soren also recalled Sonu’s association with the Jharkhand movement and his unwavering commitment to the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. He said Sonu had remained steadfast alongside party patriarch Shibu Soren, popularly known as ‘Baba Dishom Guruji’, and dedicated his life to the struggle for Jharkhand’s identity, rights and self-respect.

Soren said Sonu’s commitment to ‘Jharkhandiyat’ and his fighting spirit would always be remembered.

In his emotional tribute, the Chief Minister wrote that Sonu’s death was a personal loss and that his absence would be deeply felt.

In a social media post, the party said the JMM family was deeply saddened by Sonu’s passing and described his death as an irreparable loss for the organisation, the government and the people of Jharkhand.

The party paid tribute to his political struggle, public service and contribution to Jharkhand’s cause.
